OBERALP acquires EVOLV
Salewa, Dynafit, Pomoca, Wild Country and Evolv20 June 2019
The Oberalp Group, a mountain sports brand house based in Bolzano, has announced the immediate acquisition of the US brand Evolv specializing in climbing shoes.
«Sport climbing is a growing sector internationally - explains Ruth Oberrauch, on behalf of the family that owns the group - The acquisition of Evolv is synergistic with our Wild Country brand which operates above all in the field of technical equipment. In this way the Oberalp Group can now distinguish itself as a supplier of complete solutions for sport climbing. With Salewa, Dynafit, Pomoca and Wild Country, Evolv is our fifth proprietary brand for mountain activities, thus reinforcing our group's leading role in the vast outdoor market.»
«As a group we act only where we are competent, and we do it with passion. Our world is the mountain, including the climbing gym – adds Christoph Engl, CEO of the Oberalp Group – Our growth is the result of the fact that we are focused on mountaineering, while many other brands seem to seek success in the wider sector of outdoor. That's why the Evolv brand fits so well into the Oberalp Group's strategy. "
Evolv is one of the leading brands in the American climbing shoe market and generates an annual turnover of 6.5 million dollars, with a production of 120,000 pairs of climbing shoes a year. In addition, Evolv has successfully developed a resoling service, which is offered for climbing shoes of all brands. The main market is the American one, but has shown great potential for development in the Asian market and in Europe where it is still not widespread.
With this acquisition, the Oberalp Group underlines its dedication to climbing and bouldering, and its willingness to develop its business in this specific sector.
«The gym is the only mountain still growing – so Engl summarizes the Oberalp Group's strategy for Evolv – A young and urban mountain. With the Evolv and Wild Country brands, we focus mainly on the Asian and US markets. But Evolv will also fit perfectly into the European climber community.»
Evolv stays in Los Angeles.
Evolv was founded 16 years ago in Los Angeles by the Korean Brian Chung who for many years has been the legend Chris Sharma as an ambassador. Evolv will remain an independent brand and Brian Chung will continue to be part of the management by leading the brand as Product & Athletes Manager, while the current Operations Manager, Jason Hung, will continue to deal with product development and production. At the Los Angelese site, product development, management of athletes, sales, design and resoling services will be maintained. Logistics, purchases, customer service, finances and administration will be managed by the Oberalp Group branch in Boulder, under the responsibility of Drew Saunders, North America country manager. Distribution in Europe will be entrusted to the same Wild Country team, to optimize commercial synergies between the two brands.
The Oberalp Group considers the growth potential of the Evolv brand to be very high, also thanks to the fact that sport climbing will be an Olympic discipline starting with the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, an opportunity for great visibility among the general public. «Climbing is a new form of fitness – continues Ruth Oberrauch – Gym training does not only attract mountain enthusiasts and mountaineers. Many young people discover climbing as a sport that combines different aspects to improve: strength, agility, concentration, and more and more people discover sport climbing independently and approach climbing gyms.»
